BACKGROUND:
Originally from Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, Franceli is a proud first-generation student who pursued Computer Systems Engineering due to her natural aptitude for mathematics and problem-solving. She holds a Bachelor's in Computer System Engineering, a Master's and PhD in Computer Science.
EDUCATION:
(Program was affordable and she was drawn to the innovative potential of the field)
CAREER INSPIRATION:
"I was inspired to pursue Computer Systems Engineering because it combines several areas that interested me. I have always been good at mathematics, so I was naturally drawn to a field that relies on strong analytical and problem-solving skills. The program also includes electronics, which I was exposed to in high school and found interesting. Choosing this field was somewhat of a leap of faith, as I am a first-generation high school student and did not yet fully understand what programming or computer science involved. However, I saw it as an opportunity to challenge myself and explore a field with strong growth and innovation potential."
WHAT DRIVES HER:
"What drives me to be a strong woman in my field is both personal and shaped by my experiences. My daughter is a constant source of motivation. I want her to grow up seeing that women can pursue ambitious goals and thrive in fields like engineering. Throughout my journey from high school through my bachelor's, master's, and PhD, I was often one of the few women in the room. That experience strengthened my determination to succeed and contribute. In many ways, I felt I didn't have another option but to keep moving forward, and I hope that by doing so, I help make the path a little easier for the women who come after me."
CHALLENGE OVERCOME:
"One challenge I have faced throughout my career is dealing with impostor syndrome and being underestimated. Even now, there are times when people assume I am not an engineer or question my expertise. Experiences like this can make you doubt yourself. Currently, I am learning to trust my training, my experience, and the work I have accomplished. I also try to speak openly about these experiences and advocate for others who may face similar situations."
