BACKGROUND:
Originally from Maryland, LouAnne holds a unique background that spans psychology, education, and technology. She studied psychology as an undergraduate and master's student, then spent 23 years in the public school system supporting students with autism before earning her PhD in Information and Computer Science.
EDUCATION:
CAREER INSPIRATION:
"The iPad came out and changed everything. Seeing the potential to amplify support, I pursued a PhD in information and computer science. In my first years in the field I learned that tech amplifies more than human ability, it also amplifies social norms, which can sometimes be problematic for the people I am trying to support. Today I'm an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, where I teach courses about human-centered computing, collaboration technologies, and the social impact of technology."
WHAT DRIVES HER:
"Purpose. Knowing that I am doing the work I am meant to do. I'm motivated by the opportunity to make space for others. Earlier in this career, I didn't always see many women in technical leadership roles. Now I try to be the kind of mentor and role model I wish I had seen earlier—someone who shows that you can lead with both technical strength and empathy. Helping students discover their own purpose in technology is one of the most meaningful parts of my work."
CHALLENGE OVERCOME:
"One challenge has been learning to trust my own voice in rooms where I was sometimes the only woman or where my perspective was different from others. Over time, I realized that those differences were actually a strength. By staying focused on collaboration, integrity, and the long-term impact of the work, I learned that thoughtful leadership and persistence matter more than trying to fit someone else's mold.
